GEORGE SZELL & THE CLEVELAND ORCHESTRA..Complete Box SET. (Review by Kenneth Woods,ESO)

Here’s a great review of a very important box set.

I was so pleased to see proper consideration given to the contributions of many of the key Cleveland Orchestra principals, all legends in their own right.

The legacy of the Cleveland Orchestra of that era in music education is almost as vast as in recording in performance. You can’t swing a cat in an American orchestra without hitting someone who studied with one of Szell’s alumni.

Did you know Szell and Gál were classmates in Vienna? Gál called him the most talented musician he ever met, but lazy!

The band come together in this project to play Joe’s exciting original compositions and arrangements, which aim to engage not just jazz lovers but fans of any genre, and therefore concentrate on a wide variety of elements such as grooves, improvisation, accessible harmonic sequences, melodic writing and odd time signatures. They have recently recorded their debut E.P., and are embarking on a U.K. tour in Winter 2018 / Spring 2019. This gig promises to be one not to be missed, as they play music from their new C.D., alongside some brand new compositions.
